On the 7th July 2023, in honour of “Plastic Free July”, Go Green and representatives from three of our customers travelled to Scarborough beach to take part in a beach clean along South Bay.

Litter picking along our beaches has become a vital part of maintaining our public spaces due to the quantity of litter washing up on our shores, including an alarming amount of plastic. Not only can the litter affect the natural ocean ecosystems, that can present hazards to the marine life who inhabit both the waters and beaches.

Five Go Green employees, joined by customers Amco Giffen, ISG and Everlast, spent around 2 hours litter picking along the bay. It was great to get out into the sunshine and spend some time giving back to the local community by keeping the beach clean ahead of a busy summer weekend. Overall £1,218.96 of social value was created off the back of the event.

With waste production in the UK steadily increasing year-on-year, progress in managing and reducing the volumes of waste also needs to align. As technology improves around the world, it is great to see advances in our own sector. Greyparrot is a waste analytics platform founded in 2019, which assesses waste passing through waste processing and recycling facilities throughout 50 sites across Europe.

The system automatically recognizes waste objects and categorises them with an error rate of less than 1%; waste types include Fibre, Plastics, Textiles and Glass. Data produced from this presents Waste Managers the evidence necessary to improve operational efficiency on a singular site basis but also presents a portfolio of knowledge in the hope that it can provide a basis of change into how packaging is created and utilised in the future.  

Go Green share Greyparrot’s vision to create a world where every piece of waste is valued as a resource.

On 5th July Go Green put our baking skills to the test, for the 3rd year in a row in order to support the NHS Big Tea which, this year, was in celebration of the 75th Birthday of the National Health Service.

The proceeds of the Big Tea go towards assisting the health and wellbeing of NHS staff, who work tirelessly to look after us. Donations, amongst other avenues, will go towards break rooms for staff, as well as counselling support for those struggling with their mental health.

With our staff bringing in the best of the bakes, both sweet and savoury, Go Green is proud to have raised £136.00 towards such a fantastic cause, which was donated to our local NHS, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals.

Go Green have been working in partnership with Doncaster Chamber for 8 years. The chamber support local businesses in Doncaster, with various services, alongside linking businesses to educational settings to give early-career support. Since the launch of our GROWW Framework in 2021, Go Green have been regularly taking part in Mock Interview sessions as set up by the Chamber, in local schools around the borough, to support our WasteSchool pillar which focuses on upskilling both our own team and people within our community.

The Mock Interview sessions support students to understand how to present themselves to achieve a successful entry into the workplace whilst offering a safe space for students to ask questions, run through scenarios and get a feel for what post education interviews may be like. Through engagement with employers, and the task at hand, the sessions hope to build the confidence of the students and improve self-esteem in relation to the interview process.

Sessions cover a range of topics, such as:

• How to prepare for an interview
• What kind of career paths that interest them
• How to write a cv
• Interview style questions that focus on identifying their strength and weaknesses
• What employers look for during an interview
• Feedback sessions with students to support their development.

Since launching the GROWW Framework, Go Green have delivered 91 hours of mock interviews across 9 schools within the Doncaster area.

Our most recent visit was to Hungerhill Secondary School in Edenthorpe, where our Social Value Coordinator engaged with students from Year 10. With around 240 students participating, the sessions took place across the day with several other local business reps also taking part.

Alongside benefiting the students, the sessions highlight the skills sets we are looking for as an employer, and bring awareness to the next generation about our different sectors available to them and the variation of roles throughout.

Mayflower Sanctuary Limited is a non-profit organization that provides safe and loving care for animals searching for a forever home. The sanctuary rely on donations and volunteers to continue this inspiring work; which is why on 31st May 2023 four members of the Go Green team headed over to lend a helping hand.

Our volunteers spent the day interacting with the cats, walking the dogs and cleaning the enclosures and the surrounding sanctuary gardens. The animals loved the extra attention and our team really enjoyed spending time with them, so it’s no surprise that Mayflower volunteer days are some of our favourites!

Mayflower’s vision is for a future where all pets are provided with a responsible and loving home for life and that Mayflower Sanctuary is recognised as a quality provider of animal welfare; and Go Green are looking forward to offering our continued support with this important cause.

National Children’s Gardening Week aims to capture children’s enthusiasm at a time when results are immediate. National Children’s Gardening Week takes place annually in the ‘warm’ week at the end of May meaning that throughout the UK children can plant all the popular plants with little fear of weather damage or the need for complicated protective growing.

In celebration of National Childrens Gardening Week, Go Green were pleased to get involved and donate supplies of both plant pots and paints to the children’s ward at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust, as part of our ongoing partnership, in support of their Rainbow Garden Project. The project will see an unused grassy area turned into a children’s garden with raised beds for flowers and vegetables. The area will be a vital place to be used for the children to experience fresh air away from the ward.

Go Green donated the supplies to allow the young patients to decorate their own pots and plant seeds, providing them with a fun and creative activity to help decorate the new space. We hope that this donation will help to make their stay a little bit more enjoyable, and we would like to thank Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Charity for the opportunity to get involved.

As of May 2023 Go Green are pleased to announce that, with the assistance of our internal Health & Safety Committee, we have installed a new defibrillator at our Head Office. After the initial request was put forward by our committee, our management team looked into the benefits and signed off on this life saving piece of equipment.

For every minute it takes for a defibrillator to reach someone in cardiac arrest, their chances of survival lower which is why it is so reassuring to now have a defibrillator on site if an unfortunate incident was to occur.

Each of our 12 First Aiders have received the training, though it is peace of mind to know that any member of our staff could use the defibrillator if necessary. We have also received some eLearning information from St John Ambulance to deliver to our staff.

The health and safety of our employees is our top priority, and we’re thrilled to have this vital technology available in case of an emergency.

We are proud to have such a proactive committee working hard to enhance the safety of our workplace, and we are always grateful for their dedication to keeping our employees and visitors safe.

In honour of Earth Day, 22nd April, Go Green held a clothing collection for The Clothing Bank, who collect clothing to give to those who are struggling with the rising cost of living.

The Clothing Bank was established in 2020, when Susan Bell and Sally Parkinson saw a gap in the support chain for people accessing aid. They set up volunteer clothing drop off points which eventually led to the renovation of an outbuilding secured with National Lottery funding. As of 2023, they have 116 drop off points across the UK where you can donate the clothing you no longer need.

Clothing collections are great to hold throughout the Spring period when we all start to do clear outs. Pulling out items that we no longer need and donating them to charities like The Clothing Bank is an excellent way to not only support our communities, but also reduces the amount of discarded clothing ending up in landfill.

Go Green ran the clothing collection from the 17th to 21st April and were blown away by how many items our own staff brought in to donate. With items ranging from children’s clothing, work wear, shoes and outdoor gear, Go Green successfully donated 513 items. Our Finance Director, and one of our Sales Executives delivered the donations to a local The Clothing Bank drop off points on 10th May.
