February 10th – 16th marked the celebration of National Apprenticeship Week 2025, a time dedicated to recognising the invaluable contributions of apprentices. Each day of the week was themed to highlight different aspects of the apprenticeship experience: 

• Monday – Skills for Life 

• Tuesday – Employer Tuesday 

• Wednesday – Apprentice Wednesday 

• Thursday – T Level Thursday 

• Friday – Celebration Friday 

In honour of the week, we sent out questionnaires to our apprentices to find out about their journey so far, here’s some of their feedback:

For the second year in a row, Go Green have been short listed for the Yorkshire Post’s Business Excellence Awards, and this time we are thrilled about our shortlisting for International Business of the Year! This is great news after receiving Highly Commended within the Sustainability Award in 2023.

After 10 months of development and investment we were delighted to introduce our newest division, Go Green Ireland, in June 2024 and it is incredible to receive external recognition for the success of the division after so shortly launching.

Despite the challenges associated with creating a new division, our efforts have been rewarded with the opportunity to continue maintaining existing customer relationships overseas as well as forming new customer partnerships with the expansion.

With over 300 entries this year, we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend the awards ceremony on 21st November.

On 20th June 2024, two members of our Earthworks and Aggregates team were invited to the SOCOTEC Summer Environmental Conference. Go Green have a long-standing working partnership with SOCOTEC as we often utilise them for soil and oil water testing on behalf of our customer basis.

The conference featured an Awards portion which we were lucky enough to have taken part in. Go Green were nominated, and won, the SOCOTEC Environmental Heroes Award for our Environmental Regeneration and Sustainability Case Study.

Our submission featured a case study which was created for one of our customers, Watkin Jones, who we have worked alongside for 7 years. In more recent times we have strengthened our relationships by integrating social value into the projects we are awarded. The case study we submitted focused on an EcoHeroes session which has been developed through our GROWW Sustainability Framework. The session was carried out in April 2023, at Monks Coppenhall Academy in Crewe, a school local to a live project of Watkin Jones. Throughout the day, Go Green’s social value team and Watkin Jones’ Environmental Manager delivered 3 Eco Heroes sessions to 500 students from the primary school.

Academy Feedback:

“Go Green Eco Heroes visited Monks Coppenhall to deliver their assembly to encourage us to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for Earth Day. The children particularly enjoyed taking part in the quiz where they had to choose whether to Reduce, Reuse or Recycle each item. Since the visit from Go Green and Watkin Jones, the Eco-Council have been busy completing the task Go Green Eco Heroes set them to make posters to encourage the rest of the school to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. One of the members said, ‘There is only one Earth and you can’t recycle the whole Earth!“

With a commitment to technological innovation, and a drive to meet all our customer’s requirements, Go Green have invested our resources into integrating our internal systems with that of BRE’s environmental and site monitoring software, SmartWaste. SmartWaste offers construction companies and contractors a platform to monitor and reduce environmental impacts, and is utilised to manage all project data in one centralised place. 

 Via an Application Programming Interface (API), customer data entered into our own internal management system, and subsequently our bespoke customer portal, will automatically populate into the SmartWaste system. This latest development ensures that the process of uploading customer waste data is simplified, mitigates a labour intensive task and utilises technology to ensure data validation.  

 William Ives, Go Green’s Operation’s Director, said: “The seamless delivery of service offered to our customers is a vital element requirements towards improving the customer experience and progressing the options available through an investment in technology. We know that to grow as a business, we must expand our resource and integrate new work processes; this ensures our customer base receives the highest standard of care”.

The recent RPS update published on the 23rd of October 2024, relating to treating and using water containing concrete at construction sites before use or disposal.

This RPS applies to storing, treating and using waste water containing concrete on a construction site before use or disposal. This can include water produced by washing out equipment such as concrete mixers, concrete batching plants, delivery lorries and related equipment such as chutes, pump lines, drums, wheelbarrows

What does this mean for customers?

If you are producing waste water containing concrete on your site, you must ensure the following is met and adhered to.

Storage

• Securely store the water, so the water cannot escape, and unauthorised people cannot access it.
• Contain the water before treatment and use, for example through an impermeable settling tank, engineered lagoon or leakproof skips.
• Maintain a freeboard of 10% of the capacity of the tank, engineered lagoon or leakproof skip to prevent overtopping.
• You must not store more than 30m3 of waste water containing concrete at any time in any single location on the construction site.

Treatment

• Filtration, settlement lagoons or physical dewatering, for example in a settlement tank, silt press or other specialised treatment system.
• Correcting the pH using solutions or carbon dioxide before use or lawful disposal.
• Using products that solidify water containing concrete prior to use or transfer from the construction site.

Use

• Monitor pH of the water containing concrete and keep records of compliance of the treated water prior to use or lawful disposal.
• Comply with your waste environmental permit or exemption if you want to use set concrete on the construction site.

Disposal

If the water under this RPS cannot be used on the construction site, then it must be legally discharged or transported off-site for treatment and disposal.

Before you discharge water containing concrete, you must take certain actions first. If you discharge to:

• The foul sewer – get the sewerage undertaker’s consent
• Surface water – get a water discharge activity permit
• Ground – get a groundwater activity permit unless you qualify for a groundwater activity exclusion after assessment from the local Groundwater and Contaminated Land team

If disposal off site is required, it will need to be disposed of under one of the following codes.

• Untreated – 16 10 01* aqueous liquid wastes containing hazardous substances
• Treated – 16 10 02 aqueous liquid wastes other than those mentioned in 16 10 01*

Go Green have various service options to support with compliance of this RPS, from Portable settlement tanks to tanker removal services. Please speak to your account management team, who will provide suitable options for your site and specific requirements.

Last week, Go Green celebrated International Week of Happiness and embraced the spirit of happiness and togetherness with a series of fun and engaging activities for all staff. We kicked off the week with a Gratitude Wall which provided the opportunity for staff members to share some kind words to their fellow colleagues; our homeworkers weren’t left out either as we encouraged the use of our “Thank You” feature on our internal systems. 

It wouldn’t be International Week of Happiness without some friendly competition; we saw our House teams take part in both Hook a Duck and a golf challenge – which encouraged some healthy team rivalry!  

Topping the week off with a breakfast buffet and Fancy Dress Friday, we spent the week sharing positivity and created a space to say staff thank you to all our staff who continue to support Go Green, and allow us to grow as a business.

Go Green are delighted to announce an exciting achievement that demonstrates our increased governance throughout the business. Over the last few months, we have been working hard behind the scenes on obtaining external recognition for our sustainability performance through the Ecovadis platform. 

We are thrilled to confirm that as of August 2024, Go Green have been awarded a Silver Ecovadis rating, meaning we are in the top 15% of all companies who have submitted an Ecovadis assessment within the last 12 months. 

This recognition is another example of how, as a business, we have worked hard to ensure that our ESG and sustainability strategy incorporates many aspects of responsible business practises, and that despite still operating as an SME organisation, ESG is fully embedded as part of our business identity.

The Wood Recyclers Association (WRA) have provided an update following RPS 291 – Storing and Treating Hazardous Waste Wood.   

Since September 2023 all ‘Amber Wood’ items had been deemed as potentially hazardous, resulting in producers, such as yourselves, being involved in carrying out testing on these particular wood items with the hope to rule out any hazards.  

After 6 years of testing, the WRA are now confident that the amber wood items no longer need to be deemed as hazardous. The WRA have confirmed that the Environment Agency will now withdraw RPS 249 and RPS 291, and no longer require any further testing of the listed items below:  

 Amber items of waste wood are from buildings built between 1950 and 2006 and include:  

• Roof timbers  

• Tiling and cladding battens  

• Timber frames and joists  

 Amber items are also from buildings built between 1950 and 1995 and are:  

• Barge boards, fascias and soffits  

• External timber cladding  

• External doors  

• External windows  

This is a great outcome for waste producers, and waste facilities, who can continue to accept and recycle wood without the need for further testing. We would like to thank our customers for their support and co-operation through this time. 

*Please note, any other potentially hazardous wood such as sleepers, pylons and telegraph poles need to continue to follow the usual testing processes or be classed as hazardous unless otherwise proven.

Go Green are delighted to have successfully been recertified for our ISO 9001 and 14001 accreditations after a recent 6-day audit held in June. Since first certifying for both ISO standards back in 2009, we have consistently demonstrated that, as a business, we are considerate of our operations and how we can maintain and continuously improve a high level of quality and environmental responsibility.

Our ISO 9001 is invaluable for ensuring customer satisfaction, deliverance of our Customer VALUES Charter, customer KPI measuring and recording, as well as our subcontracted supply chain partners meeting our high standards.

Just as vital, the ISO 14001 is fundamental for us to be able to monitor and reduce our environmental impact both from our direct operations and throughout our full value chain.

Alongside receiving no non-conformances, this year we were recognised for some positive achievements within our management systems. This included our dedication to ensuring there is effective responsibility through the business for each part of both systems, complemented by our comprehensive awareness training all employees receive on our EQMS system upon their induction with the business, and each year following.

With another successful recertification under our belt, we are thrilled to continue offering a waste management service which aligns with gold standard principles, recognised across all industries.

On Friday 12th July, five of our brave Go Greener’s (self-titled “Go Green’s Jump Squad”) travelled over to Hibaldstow Airfield and threw themselves out of a plane, at 15,000ft, in the name of cancer awareness.

Many of them have been affected by cancer throughout their lives, whether that be friends, family or themselves. One type of cancer, in particular, has had a serious impact on many members of the team, and due to this the skydive is raising money for Prostate Cancer UK.

To guarantee maximum impact, the group have funded everything themselves, this ensures that every penny raised of their £1,000 fundraising goal goes directly to supporting Prostate cancer UK, and the amazing work they do.

Their Reasons for Jumping:

“It’s my 30th birthday coming up and I wanted to do something directly involved with a charitable donation to celebrate. Mum & Nan are both now cancer free, so supporting a charity of a similar nature is an amazing opportunity.”
